2021's Spiral: From the Book of Saw is a Darren Lynn Bousman horror film written by Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger. It's Saw's eighth film. Off-duty detective Marv Bozwick pursues a burglar through a sewage drainage pipe during a Fourth of July parade. Bozwick wakes in an active subway tunnel, hanging by his tongue, after being attacked from behind by a person wearing a pig mask. He is offered an option through recorded message: cut out his tongue and survive, or wait until the next train comes, killing him. Bozwick gets murdered by a train after failing to escape the trap in time. The next day, Detective Zeke Banks is assigned a new partner, idealistic rookie William Schenk, by police Captain Angie Garza. Banks and Schenk examine Bozwick's death, and Banks notices a resemblance to the Jigsaw Killer's method of operation.Meanwhile, murder investigator Fitch, who rejected a backup call from Banks and almost died, is taken and put in a trap where he must pull off his fingers to prevent electrocution; he also dies. Due of his relationship with Fitch, several police suspect Banks. The package contains a pig puppet and Schenk's tattooed flesh. A little vial inside the box leads detectives to a butcher shop that Banks and his father used to frequent. The squad finds a recording recorder and Schenk's skinned body. Marcus goes to a warehouse to find the murderer but is taken. Garza is abducted and put in a trap in the precinct's cold storage where she must slice her spinal chord to stop hot wax from dripping down her face. She fails and Banks finds her body with burns from boiling wax.
Banks is caught while following a lead. When he wakes up, he is handcuffed to a pipe and a hacksaw is nearby. He thinks about cutting off his arm with a saw, but he gets away by using a loose bobby pin. He then finds Peter Dunleavy chained in place. Dunleavy was his former partner, but Banks fired him and put him in jail after Banks found out that he had killed someone. In front of him is a big machine that crushes glass and has been changed to quickly throw shrapnel at him. A tape recorder tells Banks that he can either let him go free or let him die. Banks tries to get the key to save Dunleavy, but he can't get it in time. Banks then goes to another room and finds Schenk, who turns out to have faked his own death by using the skinned body of the thief who lured Bozwick into the tunnels. Schenk was the copycat all along. He says that his real last name is Emmerson and that he is the son of Charlie Emmerson, whom Dunleavy killed because Charlie had agreed to testify against a dirty cop. He also says that Marcus, when he was chief, protected corrupt officers on purpose so that Article 8 could be used more effectively to clean the streets of crime.
Emmerson gives Banks one last test because he thinks he could be a friend. Marcus is held in the air and his blood is slowly being drained. Emmerson calls 9-1-1 and says that he is a civilian being chased by a shooter. The dispatcher sends a SWAT team to his location. He gives Banks a revolver with one bullet and gives him a choice: shoot a target that will save Marcus but let Emmerson get away, or shoot Emmerson and let Marcus die. Banks shoots the target to save his father, which frees him from his chains and lets him fall to the ground. He then starts fighting Emmerson. Soon after, the SWAT team shows up and accidentally sets off a tripwire, which pulls Marcus's restraints again. The movement shows that Marcus has a gun on his arm, so the SWAT team thinks he is the shooter and kills him. Emmerson runs away, and Banks screams in despair.

Chris Rock contacted Lionsgate with his idea for Spiral to revitalize the Saw series and his own career.Spiral (2021) was born out of a fortuitous encounter with Michael Burns, the vice chairman of Lionsgate, at a friend's wedding in Brazil, when he was inspired to try his hand at a horror picture, but he hoped to include some humor. His plans for expanding the series were met with enthusiastic response from Lionsgate. It was Joe Drake, CEO of Lionsgate, who noted that Rock's approach was respectful to the tradition of the material, while also reinvigorating the brand with his witty, creative vision, and enthusiasm for this great horror series. Rumors circulated in January 2018 that Lionsgate was in the early stages of planning a ninth Saw film, but the Spierig Brothers would not be involved. There will be sequels, the filmmakers stated in an interview with Screen Rant. With Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger, the authors of Jigsaw, Twisted Pictures was already working on a sequel by April of last year.
Following the release of Jigsaw, Stolberg and Goldfinger were pitching a new Saw film to series veterans Mark Burg and Oren Koules, focusing solely on John Kramer / Jigsaw rather than any of his established apprentices, but Burg and Koules called the duo to inform them about Rock's ideas for a new film, with Rock contacting them shortly after to discuss his concept. Other writers had submitted their concepts for the upcoming Saw picture to Lionsgate before Rock came and integrated his with Stolberg and Goldfinger's. Burg and Koules gave the pair the task of creating a pitch for Rock. Early scripts had Rock's character tied to Danny Glover's David Tapp. Stolberg and Goldfinger decided against this since it smelled fishy. Bousman said in May 2021 that he's discussed recasting Costas Mandylor as Mark Hoffman. Tobin Bell was suggested as Jigsaw until the final day of production, but Bousman and the team decided it would make the film seem like the ninth part of the Saw series rather than a standalone picture.
